Miss Teen DC United States Partners with Samaritan Inns’ Child Development Center

June 20, 2017 by Justin Feltman

Earlier this month, Micaela Leroux Burch, Miss Teen DC United States, joined her school for a Dinner Fellowship at Lazarus House for our Adult Treatment Program. Recently elected to her school’s Service Board, she wanted to gain first hand experience with the programs and populations they’ll be serving. Upon learning more about our mission and the Women with Children Program, Micaela wanted to make our mission her mission.

IMG_4627Micaela is a 16-year-old rising senior at the National Cathedral School for Girls (NCS). Micaela believes strongly in the core values of excellent work, personal courage, personal conscience, and service to others. She is passionate about helping children learn, the earlier the better. Micaela’s academic and career interests dovetail with her service activities. She plans to conduct research and practice in psychopathology and the arts. She is interested in understanding the role that the visual and performing arts play in brain development, cognitive growth, and emotional intelligence. Micaela’s goals include master’s and doctorate degrees.

IMG_4591Because of her passion for early childhood development, the Child Development Center at Clark Inn seemed like a natural fit for her passion. “I appreciate that there is a program for the kids, not just the moms. I also like that it takes them out of harmful situations.” She shared that the treatment over imprisonment is also something she would like to see more of around the country. With Samaritan Inns, she hopes to learn more about how to understand this early phase of life and advocate for them. “I think that the support they have for the children ties into my interests in art and interactions [that] make a great foundation for growth.”

This week, Micaela brought joy to our children as she came, in her crown and sash, to deliver games, puzzles, and books, including her own childhood favorite, Peter Rabbit. These generous gifts are are greatly appreciated, as kids immediately put them to good use.

Nationals for the Miss Teen United States will be taking place the first week in July down in Orlando, Florida. We will certainly be rooting Micaela on from DC and can’t wait to see her, and our Child Development Center, grow together.

For more information on Miss Teen DC United States, please contact Regina Burch at reginaburch@usa.net or visit her on Facebook.

Princeton University’s Work Day for Samaritan Inns

April 12, 2017 by Justin Feltman

One of the last associations you think of when you think of Spring Break would be addiction recovery education. But for Princeton University’s Breakout Trip,
that’s exactly what they pursued, a great understanding of treatment, drug and substance use disorder policy, and people in recovery. Over the course of the week, they met with the DEA, advocacy groups, and an author for insight. Samaritan Inns was privileged to be one of the stops along the way.

IMG_7395As an organization that has served DC since 1985, we taught the students about lessons we have learned over the years, as well as the changes in the political and social environment in which we serve. After that orientation, the students got to work, beautifying the yard of Elisha House, one of our Affordable Housing Communities, and making lunch for the clients in our Adult Treatment Program.

Sharing his thoughts on the day, Noah (Class of 2019) shared, “This was a great day because it is our only time we are doing hands-on service work during this week, and it was very fulfilling to tangibly assist an organization that works on the ground level to help drug users. It was fascinating to see how many people play small roles to address the problems of drug abuse and enact change.”

The day was certainly a success, not only making our communities more welcoming but also, through a delicious lunch and fellowship, provided a midweek pick-me-up and brought joy to our clients, all of who loved the food and the company! We are grateful to our volunteers, both locally and across the country, who invest their time in our programs and in our clients. Even the smallest gestures can go a long ways.

Princeton, thank you for your service. You are welcome back any time!

Christmas with Samaritan Inns

December 30, 2015 by Justin Feltman

FullSizeRenderOne of the best gifts that Christmas time brings is family. A community that loves and cares about us. For our Adult Treatment Program Clients, this time of year can be bittersweet. Although participating in the program provides the gift of recovery, our residents must stay on-site for the entire 28 day treatment period, preventing them from being “home for the holidays.”
The Clark family of Clark Construction understands this and, for years, fill that need. Each year they deliver gifts for every client in our treatment and transitional programs to make sure they feel cared for. Each client receives a winter coat, sweater, watch, and several other gifts. Every client shared how grateful and humbled they were. One client shared that the Clark family “Inspired me to believe in goodness and kindness again.” Another stated, “This Christmas is one of my most memorable Christmas’ I have had in a very long time.”
GroupThis year, Samaritan Inns’ President, Larry Huff, and his wife, along with another couple from their church, prepared a Christmas dinner. Meanwhile, at Clark Inn, Chantal Rogers, a member of The District Church, and her husband prepared a special dinner for the Women and Children Program.
Through their service, every resident was a member of our Samaritan Inns family for Christmas. Samaritan Inns is fortunate to have supporters and volunteers who are dedicated to our mission and create a loving and supportive environment and community for our clients on their journey towards sobriety throughout the year.

Volunteer Spotlight: Laura Davis

December 9, 2015 by Justin Feltman

Four years ago, Laura Davis began her freshman year at Georgetown University. She wasimage1 undecided on a major and a career path but knew she wanted to join APO, Georgetown’s co-ed community service fraternity, where she first heard of Samaritan Inns.

While Laura didn’t know much about the issues Samaritan Inns’ residents face every day in addiction and in recovery, she knew the most important part of volunteering with our residents: listening.

“I feel like people who are suffering from addictions to drugs and alcohol are not always heard because people just don’t take the time to talk to them. They are just the nicest people who have just had a hard time in life,” Laura shared, “I just find everything they have to say is super interesting. It keeps me wanting to come back.”

And she has. Laura faithfully served our residents throughout her stay at Georgetown University.

One day, while at the Verizon Center for a basketball game, Laura ran into an alumnus of our 28-day program. He hugged her and thanked her for her support.

“At the time, when you’re just sitting and talking with them, it may not seem like a lot, but, to them it means so much,” Laura said. As great as the meals were that her group served to the residents in dinner fellowship, Laura found real value in the service by showing she cared and that our residents matter.

Laura is getting ready to graduate this spring from Georgetown. She’s currently applying for graduate school to study public health. Samaritan Inns is so grateful for the past years of service and her continued dedication to public issues. We can’t think of a better person for the field!

First Christian Church Disciples of Christ Day of Service

July 8, 2014 by Justin Feltman

Larrys Sisters ChurchIt has been a very productive summer so far here at Samaritan Inns and the volunteer projects just keep rolling in! On June 23rdwe were blessed to have First Christian Church Disciples of Christ come and volunteer their time and energy to our organization. The congregation came all the way from Kentucky to perform a beautification project for our Tabitha’s house location where they gave the buildings hallways a new up-to-date look!

The Church has missions group has traveled all over to provide service and help those who are less fortunate and consider it their mission to lend a hand wherever they can. The team arrived and went straight to work and not only did they do a beautification project but they took time out on Monday to participate in our Dinner Fellowship program! The Intensive Recovery staff welcomed them with open arms and they say and fellowshipped with our clients and provided much needed words of encouragement. It was truly an impactful time of service and we here at Samaritan Inns are truly appreciative of their time and effort!
