Getting Sober is Challenging: You Are Not Alone

By Sonya Schweitzer

Getting sober is one of the most challenging journeys a person can take, but it is also one of the most rewarding. For those who struggle with addiction, the thought of getting sober can be daunting. However, it is essential to remember that you are not alone in this journey. Countless people have walked the path to sobriety before you, and many are currently on the same journey at Samaritan Inns in Washington, DC. Getting sober is challenging, but this blog will discuss the importance of knowing you are not alone.

You are not alone while getting sober

The Importance of Knowing You Are Not Alone

You are not alone in the journey. When it comes to addiction, many people feel ashamed or embarrassed. They may feel like they are the only ones struggling with their addiction or that they are weak for being unable to control their behavior.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million American adults (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2017. (American Addiction Centers) Current studies are underway, but we believe the statistics will be higher.

It is important to remember that addiction is a disease, not a reflection of your character or worth. Knowing that you are not alone in your struggle can help to alleviate some of the stigma associated with addiction.

Getting sober is challenging but more manageable with the support of others.

Face the Challenge with Support and Care

Attending support groups is one of the best ways to connect with others going through the same journey. Support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous provide a safe and welcoming environment for people to share their experiences, strengths, and hope with one another. These groups can be a great source of inspiration and motivation for those just starting their journey to sobriety.

Another resource in the Washington DC region is Samaritan Inns. Please don’t take my word for it; listen to the stories of those that have won the challenge of getting sober. Hear the stories in their own words. Listen to the accounts of those that took on the challenge and now lead a healthy and sober life.
