Interning with Samaritan Inns!

June 7, 2017 by Justin Feltman

This Fall, Samaritan Inns is fortunate enough to have a few extra hands on board with our Adult Treatment Program. Shawn, an undergraduate Social Work student at Eastern Mennonite University, and Theresa, a graduate Clinical Pyschology student at Institute for the Psychological Sciences at Divine Mercy University, are interning with us this Fall and into the winter.

Shawn

IMG_1333Shawn hails from Culpepper, Virginia. He came to Eastern Mennonite University, unclear of what his area of study should be but knew his end goal. “I always wanted to help people.” At first, Shawn was Pre-Law, but found it was not for him. Then, he joined their Global Peacemaking Program. But finally, he settled in on Social Work, a field he’s been passionate about ever since.

To finish his degree, he, along with 14 others from EMU, are staying here in DC, while working full-time at internships throughout the city. Shawn loved the environment and people of Samaritan Inns and was excited to get started.

Working side by side with counselors, our patient intake, and monitors, Shawn is able to get a lot of hands on experience on what it is like to work in the field of substance use disorders. Shawn’s passion for the work shines through, as he always tries to do more than what is expected of him.

Shawn loves what he does at Samaritan Inns. He truly feels like he can allow his true self to shine. “The person that rolls out of bed is the person at work.” He loves interacting with the clients and getting to know their stories. At first, he felt that, since he is a young college student, his age would be a challenge. But, as he had a few conversations, the age gaps begin to disappear.

As Shawn wraps up his undergraduate program, he shares that his ultimate goal is to work with juvenile populations, to help youth the way he has helped many clients at Samaritan Inns, listening.

Theresa

IMG_1327When she first started looking for internships, substance use disorders were not an area of interest. She joined Samaritan Inns, thanks mostly to Judy, the Director of Treatment Programs, and the positive staff and work environment. “It has a good spirit. It sounds like a silly thing to say but there’s such a good atmosphere here,” Theresa shared.

While here, she’s grown passionate about the work and mission. According to her, she’s not alone in that experience. Many in her program found working with substance use disorders to be a fascinating and rewarding field.

On a day to day, she co-leads a psychological education group with JoAnne, the Director of the Adult Treatment Program, individual therapy, and, soon, she will be doing child therapy at the Clark Inn as well.

In her studies, Theresa’s primary focus is people recovering from trauma, such as child abuse and domestic violence. From her time here, she’s discovered the common thread of such traumas with substance use disorders, inciting a curiosity with how to address this on multiple levels.

Theresa excelled in the classroom but this was a big step for real life application. “The big difference so far just how intensely real people and their experiences are. Like, when you get to hear their stories, it’s so profoundly amazing,” she shared.

Like Shawn, Theresa will be graduating with her Master’s this year. She plans on returning to the St. Louis area. Before coming to Samaritan Inns, she wanted to work with children and adolescence, but, her experience here, has opened up a variety of interests for her.

Time will tell what the future will hold for both of our interns. We truly appreciate their service at Samaritan Inns and would welcome the opportunity for their return in the future!

Ashley’s Story: A Celebration of The Women with Children Program’s Success

October 27, 2016 by Justin Feltman

imageAshley fell into postpartum depression when she had her daughter, who is almost now 3 years old. On top of that, she was stuck in a very bad relationship. To cope with it, she began using. “I was in a really bad place and was using a lot, but, all that I was using, it never seemed like enough,” she recalled. Then, Ashley found out she was pregnant with her son.

“When I found out I was pregnant with him, it was either keep using or get clean. I left [the relationship], and went to my mom and aunt for help. My aunt, she used to use. And she went to Lazarus House.” With that, Ashley came to Samaritan Inns, entering the 28-day Adult Treatment Program.

While in treatment, Judy Ashburn, our Director of Treatment Programs, mentioned the new Women with Children Program to her as a next step after her 28 days in treatment.

Last year, Samaritan Inns launched our Women with Children Program at the Clark Inn, the first such program in the District of Columbia. Samaritan Inns’ landmark Women with Children Program addresses one of the most critically underserved populations in the District of Columbia by providing comprehensive treatment and recovery services to women who are battling substance use disorders and homelessness, while providing care for their children at the same location.

Since substance use affects the entire family unit; healing and recovery must involve the whole family. From this philosophy, Samaritan Inns used their 30 years of experience to create a program designed to preserve and heal the entire family unit.

The program offers mothers counseling and therapy from licensed clinicians, case management services, family therapy sessions, child development services, and much more over the course of our 6 month program.

The biggest challenge was opening up, trusting that she was in a safe space to share. “You have to talk about your feelings and why you used, how you’re not going to use. I mean, you have to be 100% open. I lied to protect myself. Pretty much because I felt embarrassed,” Ashley shared.

But eventually, the staff, over the course of her stay, earned her trust. “I finally let my guard down. I think after 90 days here, my half way point, I became a new person.” Once she experienced this change, she opened up to the staff, to the other mothers, and to the treatment programming.

“I made friendships here, I still keep up,” she shared about the staff and fellow residents, “It’s like having siblings.” “You’re never really alone. If you need a break or need some advice, you always have someone there to help you and guide you.” Beyond just the parenting classes focusing on Ashley and her kids, Samaritan Inns offered classes to help heal the relationship between Ashley and her mother. “We never really had a relationship. We always butt heads,” she confessed, “But now, after the therapy, we understand each other a lot more. It gets better day by day.”

When asked what the best advice she received in the program, she responded, “Be true to yourself first. Because if you can’t be true to yourself, first, there is no hope in what you can do.”

Leaving Samaritan Inns was bittersweet. She wanted to stay but knew it was time for the next chapter. So the staff connected her with a transitional housing facility, where she currently resides.

10 days after leaving Clark Inn, she gave birth to her son. She just returned to school at Prospect College, where she’s taking an 8 month medical assistance program and acquire a phlebotomy license. From there, she hopes to create a career in medicine and create a bright future for her children.

As we reflect on the 1 year anniversary of the Women with Children Program, stories such as Ashley’s highlight the importance of such a program and the bright future that it provides. Clark Inn stands as a symbol of hope for our city and our mothers, who are wrestling with these issues, for many years to come.

Respond Day with 4th Presbyterian Church

October 21, 2016 by Justin Feltman

This month, we were blessed enough to be a partnered site for Fourth Presbyterian Church’s Respond Day 2016. Located in Bethesda, MD, Fourth Presbyterian makes it a yearly tradition to dedicate themselves to community organizations working to eradicate poverty and serve those in need. Melissa Voorhees, one of the volunteers and members of the church, shared how the pastor’s mission statement for the church is for them to be “a gospel centered community involved in neighbor loving service.”

This year’s project was to clean and paint our Lazarus House Community Room, where our Adult Treatment Program hosts classes. Before the group began their work, Lynette Daniels, the  Co-Director of our Affordable Housing Communities Program, shared some powerful stories about our program and emphasized to our volunteers that they should “never underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint” and a new start.

The room looks wonderful and so much brighter. When sharing about her experience at Samaritan Inns for Respond Day, Melissa stated, “My favorite part of being at Samaritan Inns, apart from just spending good, useful time with friends of like mind and purpose, was sitting down for lunch with the people who have found safe haven there. It was encouraging to see that people in need are being helped. Grace and peace and gratitude in the faces around us.”

The clients, and our staff, are so grateful for Fourth Presbyterian’s day of service. Look forward to seeing you again next year!

Do More for “The Chair”

June 1, 2016 by Justin Feltman

b722650c-acd7-49c5-ac45-c69cd390405cAt Samaritan Inns, during every counseling session, we sit out one empty chair. Every client knows that this chair represents the person who isn’t here yet. This is the next client that walks through our doors and onto the road to recovery.

Every year, Samaritan Inns serves around 200 of “the next clients” who fill that chair. Tomorrow, on June 2nd, you can Do More for each and every one of these client. Just $24 will provide a clients with the basic toiletries needed for their 28 days in treatment. And, if you recruit 5 more friends, you can provide housing to them for the first two weeks in treatment. Furthermore, if you make your donation from 4 pm-6 pm, you put Samaritan Inns in the running for a $1,000 bonus prize, if we are the top fundraising organization during that time.

With your help, when a new client enters our program and sits in that chair, we can do more! Thank you!

Clark Construction Provides Lunch for Adult Treatment & Women with Children Programs

May 26, 2016 by Justin Feltman

Today, about a dozen regional executives at Clark Construction stopped by Samaritan Inns to provide a wonderful cook out for our clients in the Adult Treatment Program and the Women with Children Program. Led by Board Chairman, Mike Alto, the group cooked up some delicious burgers, hot dogs, pasta salad, brownies and more.

Such a wonderful experience had by all. We are truly grateful for their service!
